Fractions
Key rules
To ADD or SUBTRACT fractions -- find a common denominator first
Always SIMPLIFY your answer
Common mistake: do NOT add the denominators
Example: 2/5 + 1/10 = 4/10 + 1/10 = 5/10 = 1/2
Factors, Multiples and Sets
Key rules
Factor -- divides exactly into a number (no remainder) Multiple -- found by multiplying a number HCF -- Highest Common Factor -- largest shared factor LCM -- Lowest Common Multiple -- smallest shared multiple
Sets symbols:
∩ = intersection (elements in BOTH sets)
∪ = union (ALL elements in either set)
∈ = belongs to
⊂ = subset of
Integers and BODMAS
Integer rules
Positive + Positive = Positive
Negative + Negative = Negative
Positive + Negative = subtract, keep sign of larger number
Multiplication and Division:
Same signs = Positive answer
Different signs = Negative answer
Rectangle Perimeter = 2 x (length + width)
Rectangle Area = length x width
Triangle Area = half x base x height
Angle types:
Acute: less than 90 degrees
Right: exactly 90 degrees
Obtuse: between 90 and 180 degrees
Straight: exactly 180 degrees
Reflex: between 180 and 360 degrees
Angle facts:
Angles on a straight line = 180 degrees
Angles around a point = 360 degrees
Angles in a triangle = 180 degrees
Mean = total of values divided by number of values Median = middle value after arranging in order Mode = most frequent value Range = highest value minus lowest value
